The most expensive horse racing in the world

On 24th February 2023, Riyadh will host the "Saudi Cup" championship, which groups major races and preliminary competitions on grass and soil tracks, with a total prize pool of 20 million dollars.

Horses constitute one of the most prominent features of the authentic Arab culture and the deep-rooted Saudi history. The Arabian horse has a plentiful history in the Arabian Peninsula since ancient times and spread all over the world, acquired the admiration and appreciation of many horse lovers and used in many activities to serve humanity. All ancient and historical manuscripts confirmed that the homeland of authentic Arabian Horses, is Arabian Peninsula, The most important cross breeds of racing horses in Britain, some of them were preserved as authentic Arabian breeds that were not crossed with other breeds, and their characteristics were genetically selected and achieved what we see now. This year, the Kingdom organizes the “Saudi Cup” race in 2021, aiming to encourage horse lovers and horse races around the world to recognize our inveterate culture and our wonderful country, and to discover an amazing place they have not seen before, and they will look forward to visiting again. During the forthcoming years, we are pleased that the Saudi Cup race will succeed in attracting some of the best horses worldwide, to become one of the most favorite races, whether for the participants or the viewers.

  • Conditions of the temporary import of horses from the United States of America to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to participate in the Saudi Cup Race:

    1.         In order to obtain an Import, permit a fully completed Import Permit Application form, including the Owners Declaration section, should be submitted to MOEWA, at least 14 days prior to intended date of shipment.

    2.         Attach the result of blood tests for equine anemia, with a test (coggins test), must be negative during 30 days within the date of shipment.

    3.         Attach a proof of vaccination of the imported horses to Equine Influenza.

    4.         The health certificate must be approved by the veterinary authorities accredited in the exporting country.

    5.         All requirements stated in the health certificate must be approved between the Kingdom and the countries of the USA.

    6.         The imported horses may be identified by the microchip number.

    7.         A copy of the passport of the imported horses must be attached.

    8.         The date of arrival of imported horses to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia must be declared.

    9.         The imported horses must be examined on the day of shipment, or the last working day before shipment and ensure that there are no apparent symptoms of infectious diseases and external parasites.

    10.       The imported horse must be kept in the country of origin, or one of the approved countries (EU, UK, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Korea, and Japan) within 40 days before the date of dispatch.

    11.       The exporting country must be free from Dourine disease within the six months preceding the shipment date.

    12.       The exporting country must be free from Glanders during the six months preceding the shipment date.

    13.       The exporting country must be free from African horse sickness disease for the past two years preceding the shipment date.

    14.       The vaccination against African Horse Sickness Disease must not be applied during the past 12 months preceding the shipment date.

    15.       The exporting country must be free from Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis within the past two years of the shipment date.

    16.       Application of the blood tests for Equine Infectious Anemia, with a test (coggins test), test must be negative during 30 days within the date of shipment

    17.       Vaccination against equine influenza must be applied within 90 days before shipment, and the vaccination is prohibited within 14 days before shipment.

    18.       The imported horse must not be mixed with other horses that are not identical in the health condition during the shipping process.

    19.       The vehicle should be cleaned and disinfected in advance with disinfectant officially recognized in the country of dispatch.

    20.       Application of emergency measures stated by the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture must be followed in the case of a ban on the import of horses from the exporting country.

  • Conditions of the temporary import of horses from the European Union and the United Kingdom to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to participate in the Saudi Cup race:

    1-         The country of origin must be a member of the European Union.

    2-         The health certificate must be approved by the veterinary authorities accredited in the exporting country.

    3-         All requirements stated in the health certificate must be approved between the Kingdom and the countries of the European Union and the United Kingdom.

    4-         The imported horses may be identified by the microchip number.

    5-         A copy of the passport of the imported horses must be attached.

    6-         The date of arrival of imported horses to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia must be declared.

    7-         The imported horses must be examined on the day of shipment, or the last working day before shipment, and ensure that there are no apparent symptoms of infectious diseases and external parasites.

    3-         All requirements stated in the health certificate must be approved between the Kingdom and Arab Gulf States.

    4-         The imported horses may be identified by the microchip number.

    5-         A copy of the passport of the imported horses must be attached.

    6-         The date of arrival of imported horses to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia must be declared.

    7-         The imported horses must be examined on the day of shipment, or the last working day before shipment and ensure that there are no apparent symptoms of infectious diseases and external parasites.

    8-         It must attach the results of blood tests for imported horses.

    9-         The imported horse must not be mixed with other horses that are not identical in the health condition during the shipping process.

    10-       The vehicle should be cleaned and disinfected in advance with disinfectant officially recognized in the country of dispatch.

    21.       Application of emergency measures stated by the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture must be followed in the case of a ban on the import of horses from the exporting country.


  • Conditions of the temporary import of horses from South Korea to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to participate in Saudi Cup Race.

    1. Attach the result of blood tests for Equine Infectious Anemia with (Coggins test) must be negative during 30 days within the date of shipment.
    2. Attach a proof of vaccination of the imported horses to Equine Influenza and Japanese B Encephalitis.
    3. The health certificate must be approved by the veterinary authorities accredited in the exporting country.
    4. All requirements stated in the health certificate must be approved between the Kingdom and the South Korea.
    5.  The imported horses must be identified by the microchip number.
    6. A copy of the passport of the imported horses must be attached.
    7. The date of arrival of imported horses to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia must be declared.
    8. The imported horses must be examined on the day of shipment and ensure that there are no apparent symptoms of infectious diseases and external parasites.
    9. The imported horse must be kept in the country of origin, or one of the approved countries (USA, EU, UK, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Japan) within 40 days before the date of dispatch.
    10.  The imported horses must be quarantined for a period of 30 days before the date of shipment, and it must be under the veterinary health supervision in the exporting country.
    11. The horses to be exported must not be in contacted with other horses during the quarantine period.
    12.  The exporting country must be free from Dourine disease within the six months preceding the shipment date.
    13. The exporting country must be free from Glanders during the six months preceding the shipment date.
    14. The exporting country must be free from African horse sickness disease for the past two years preceding the shipment date.
    15. The vaccination against African Horse Sickness Disease must not be applied during the past 12 months preceding the shipment date.
    16. The exporting country must be free from Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis within the past two years of the shipment date.
    17. The exporting country must be free from vesicular stomatitis during the six months preceding the shipment date.
    18. Application of blood test for Equine Infectious Anemia, with a test (Coggins test) must be negative during 30 days within the date of shipment

    23. The vehicle should be cleaned and disinfected in advance with disinfectant officially recognized in the country of dispatch.
    24. The health certificate must be signed by the quarry official in the exporting country on the same day of shipment.
    25. Application of emergency measures stated by the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture must be followed in the case of a ban on the import of horses from the exporting country.

  • Conditions of the temporary import of horses from the Chile to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to participate in the Saudi Cup race:

    1-         The country of origin must be a member of the Chile.

    2-         The health certificate must be approved by the veterinary authorities accredited in the exporting country.

    3-         All requirements stated in the health certificate must be approved between the Kingdom and the countries of the Chile.

    4-         The imported horses may be identified by the microchip number.

    5-         A copy of the passport of the imported horses must be attached.

    6-         The date of arrival of imported horses to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia must be declared.

    7-         The imported horses must be examined on the day of shipment, or the last working day before shipment, and ensure that there are no apparent symptoms of infectious diseases and external parasites.
