Saudi Arabia has highlighted its role in developing and sustaining the fisheries sector. This came during the conclusion of the 36th session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI36).
Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia to the FAO of the United Nations, Dr. Mohammad Al-Ghamdi chaired the meeting, which was held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome. The meeting saw participation from over 19 ministers from various countries and more than 300 officials and delegates of FAO member states.
The Director-General of the FAO, Qu Dongyu, appreciated the prominent role played by Saudi Arabia during its presidency of the 36th session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI36). He commended its support for the efforts of governments and international organizations in enhancing the fisheries sector.
Dr. Al-Ghamdi highlighted Saudi Arabia's key role during its presidency for two years in leading and unifying international efforts to advance the sector. He also noted that the committee conducted numerous significant meetings, with the main committee comprising two subcommittees: one for fisheries and the other for aquaculture. Over two years, the committee held more than 18 official meetings.
COFI36 meeting focused on the vital role of fisheries and aquaculture in tackling food insecurity, malnutrition, and poverty, the ability to alleviate hunger, drive sustainable growth, and reverse environmental degradation.
