Ministry Overview

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) is the national entity responsible for leading and sustaining the three vital sectors in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Ministry operates through an integrated system of policies, strategies, and innovative solutions to protect natural resources, achieve water and food security, improve quality of life, and support the national economy in line with Saudi Vision 2030.

    1367 (1948)

    Establishment of the General Directorate of Agriculture and its affiliation with the Ministry of Finance.

    1373 (1953)

    Transformation of the Directorate into the Ministry of Agriculture and Water by Royal Decree (5/21/1/4951).

    1381 (1961)

    Creation of specialized agencies for agricultural and water affairs.

    1385 (1965)

    Division of the Ministry into two sectors (Agricultural Affairs) and (Administrative and Financial Affairs) by decision of the Supreme Committee for Administrative Reform No. (8).

    1390 (1970)

    Establishment of the Desalination Affairs Agency (which became the Saline Water Conversion Corporation in 1394 / 1974).

    Linking the General Organization for Grain Silos and Flour Mills to the Ministry (Council of Ministers Decision No. 34 and Decree No. M/3).

    Issuance of Royal Order No. (27482/A) separating the water sector into an independent ministry.
