During a workshop entitled "Climate-smart technology", held on Nov. 5-7, 2019 in Tokyo, Japan, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture (MEWA) outlined its efforts to develop smart agriculture techniques and maintain sustainable agriculture, and affirmed its strong support to farmers to achieve food security and promote comprehensive agricultural development.
At the event, Director General of Plant Wealth at the Ministry Dr. Sulaiman AlKhateeb, delivered a paper on the development of date palm cultivation in the Kingdom through smart-climate technologies. He also showcased the efforts of MEWA to offer smart and effective solutions to preserve this tree and the experience of the extension digital platform launched earlier by MEWA to disseminate knowledge to farmers and offer proper solutions to preserve the environment in the Kingdom.
For his part, Director General of Fisheries at the Ministry Dr. Ali AlSheikhi talked about the experience of sea cucumber aquaculture in the Kingdom, and efforts made towards environmental development in general and maintain ecological balance in the Red Sea in particular, and to enhance fish stocks and achieve food security.
This workshop is one of smart climate technologies workshops held within the annual meetings of G20 Agricultural Chief Scientists (MACS-G20), results of which will be presented at the next MACS-G20 to be hosted by Saudi Arabia. It is an initiative of G20 Agriculture Ministers to address the core issues in agriculture and nutrition, which can be solved through our national efforts, to better coordinate agricultural research systems, implement common solutions and strategies, promote smart climate technologies and to support decision makers, scientists and practitioners.
