The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia won the chairmanship of the Desert Locust Control Committee (DLCC), which comprises 36 states, for the next two years, during the launch of the forty-first session held in Addis Ababa.
The representative of the Locusts Control and Migratory Pests Center Eng. Marea Al-Qahtani, representing the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, has participated in this three-day session.
Al-Qahtani said in a statement on this occasion that the Kingdom's win shows how the DLCC's member states appreciate the Kingdom's valuable efforts in combating locusts and migratory pests.
He also highlighted the financial assistance provided by the Kingdom which worth one million five hundred thousand dollars to support the FAO emergency fund of the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Central Region, aiming to promote desert locust control operations in Yemen, Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia.
It is noteworthy that the DLCC, among other duties, continuously follows up the Desert Locust situation and provides technical and scientific advice to the DLCC 's Director General on this regard to take the necessary control measures and policy directives, coordinates work among locust control bodies and commissions, strengths coordination among national and international policies and preventive measures in desert locust control.
