Saudi Arabia Recognized by the United Nations as a Global Model for Water Sustainability and Development Goals Achievement

The United Nations Water Committee has selected the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a model of best practices for accelerating the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) related to water. The recognition was announced during the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Representing the Kingdom, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture presented to the Committee the key lessons learned from Saudi Arabia’s experience in enhancing water security and sustainability in a region facing severe natural water scarcity. These lessons included high-level political will and commitment, the formulation of strategies with clear roles and measurable objectives, the involvement of the private sector as a partner in service delivery and infrastructure, the use of innovation and data to strengthen water governance, and the building of partnerships and international cooperation.

Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Shaibani, Deputy Minister for Water at the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, stated that this approach led to notable improvements in efficiency, coordination, and service quality between 2017 and 2023. During this period, the Kingdom’s Integrated Water Resources Management Index rose from 57% to 83%, representing one of the fastest global growth rates for SDG indicator 6.5.1.

This recognition marks a culmination of the Kingdom’s efforts to enhance the sustainability of water resources and achieve sustainable development goals. Initiatives by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture have contributed to the development of integrated strategies across its three sectors, improved water management efficiency, and strengthened partnerships with the private sector and international stakeholders — further establishing the Kingdom’s position as a global model in addressing water scarcity challenges and achieving water security in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
