The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture said that tree planting is one of the most effective natural solutions for mitigating the impact of high summer temperatures. Trees play a role in cooling urban areas, improving air quality, and supporting environmental sustainability in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
The ministry said trees lower surface and air temperatures by providing shade and cooling through evapotranspiration. As well as improving the quality of life in cities, parks and other public spaces. MEWA added that afforestation can absorb up to 150 kilograms of carbon dioxide each year.
Expanding vegetation also delivers a range of public health and environmental benefits, the ministry said, including lower stress levels, improved mental well-being, cleaner air, and reduced noise pollution. Tree planting also supports biodiversity by creating habitats for wildlife.
MEWA encouraged the use of native tree species, saying they are better adapted to Saudi Arabia's climate and require less water, making them more sustainable and improving the long-term success of afforestation projects. It also recommended irrigating trees during the summer season in the early morning or late evening and using drip irrigation systems, which can reduce water loss from evaporation by as much as 50% compared with conventional irrigation methods.
The ministry described tree planting as a long-term investment in the environment and future generations, saying its success depends on broad community participation and the adoption of environmentally responsible practices that help expand vegetation cover and protect natural resources.
