Under the patronage of His Excellency Eng. Abdulrahman Alfadley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Chairman of the Ministerial Council of the Middle East Green Initiative, and President of the 16th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16), a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today at the ministry's headquarters in Riyadh between the Green Middle East Initiative and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
The agreement was signed on behalf of the Middle East Green Initiative by its Secretary-General, Eng. Ibrahim Alturki, and on behalf of the UNCCD by Executive Secretary Dr. Yasmine Fouad.
The MoU aims to establish a sustainable collaborative framework between the two parties to address environmental challenges and strengthen regional and international efforts to restore degraded land and expand vegetation cover. The partnership will focus on information sharing, capacity building, and knowledge transfer in the areas of vegetation development and land degradation prevention. It will also promote greater awareness among member states of the initiative while enhancing international cooperation and partnerships with the Global Land Initiative, launched by Saudi Arabia during its presidency of the G20 in 2020.
The agreement reflects Saudi Arabia's regional leadership through the Middle East Green Initiative and builds on the efforts of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture to advance the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
