Desertification is the decline in the soil's biological production capacity and the deterioration of its fertility. The United Nations, in its 1994 Paris Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), officially defined the phenomenon as "land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting from various factors, including climatic variations and human activities." The United Nations drafted a convention to combat desertification in December 1996, which aims to oblige countries to implement concrete measures to combat desertification and protect the environment and natural resources. At the time, 60 countries, including Saudi Arabia, ratified the convention. The Kingdom and most Arab countries are considered arid regions with fragile ecosystems due to their geographical location, due to high temperatures and fluctuating rainfall, which has contributed to the increasing negative impacts of this phenomenon. The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture also launched the Drought Preparedness and Mitigation Capacity Development Initiative. This initiative aims to design and establish an integrated system to combat desertification and sand encroachment. This initiative will be implemented by developing a national strategy and executive plan to combat desertification, in addition to conducting studies on invasive plants in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and methods for combating them. This opportunity will present solutions that harness digital technologies, such as the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, to enhance vegetation cover, reduce desertification and soil erosion, ensure monitoring of environmental compliance (soil quality and desertification), and reduce soil pollution using the data and information provided.
